Over 5 years ago, I wrote an article about why “cash discounting” could destroy your business as thousands of agents raked in profits regardless of what Visa said about it not being compliant. Today I learned about a business owner getting a 5k fine for violating Visa’s guidelines.
This is why ‘purpose’ matters.
Many providers enter payments because of the ‘money’ and not for the ‘people’.
I say it all the time…
The ‘people’ are the gift, not the money.
Other than potential fines, here are more reasons why ‘cash-discounting’ is bad for your business:

Payment Facilitation.
Embedded Payments.
The hottest trends in the fintech and financial sector that I’ve been involved in for years now.
I hear all the conversations.
SAAS companies that are white-labeling payment processing tools as their own to monetize payments.
This is a great thing when they pick the right platform to integrate with that allows them to serve their customers better.
It’s awful though when they don’t have enough staff to support the core functionality of their product and their customer experience takes a dive.
What make it worse is when customers have this impression their software provider launched a lucrative revenue stream, even though they got bad economics on it, and didn’t beef up their support resources.
Should you take advantage of embedding payments and other financial tools to better serve business clients?
Yes, you probably should.
But embedded finance should help you build a better company and customer experience, not detract from it.
I routinely hear from customers how they feel about their software and payment providers and many times they are frustrated.
This is typically because someone signed them up and then disappeared once the deal was done.
Then the support team has to try to make it right, without being empowered to do so.
We have to get this right for customers.
These business owners, general managers, and c-level executives do not have time to chase software and payments people around or constantly call support.
You do it right by making sure you have the right tools, partners, and economics so your team doesn’t get overwhelmed by managing another iteration of your product that they aren’t experts in.

When I started working with restaurant owners 8 years ago, I was inspired by the culture and family feel you get when you step into a buzzing restaurant. Every single employee plays a key role in making sure customers have a great experience.
Over the years, especially during the pandemic, restaurant owners have faced additional pressure trying to navigate labor, food, technology, and safety costs, which has added to the challenge of attracting and retaining employees.
In today’s episode, I’m talking with Jim Taylor of Benchmark Sixty, a global consulting firm that is dedicated to helping restaurants solve the challenges they face when it comes to retaining employees, managing labor costs, and increasing productivity, all without having to raise menu prices so restauranteurs can continue to build restaurants that thrive in our communities.
