😩 There is a lot of (MIS)information out there about autism spectrum disorder (ASD): From what it is, to what causes it, and even about treatments for it.

🔸 On the flip side, there's also A LOT of good information 👍👍 put out there by the , and patient/parent advocate groups such as . We're not here to reinvent the wheel. Just trying to ｒａｉｓｅ ａｗａｒｅｎｅｓｓ.

🔸 As pediatricians, the concern for an ASD often is triggered by regular screening, or because parents feel "something just isn't right." 🤨

📢 📢 Parents: TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!! If you don't think something is right with your child, speak up! Often, young children with ASD can "compensate" for short periods such as during a doctor's visit, so what is seen at home is not caught in the pediatrician's office.

🔸 There is validated science that shows the earlier a child is diagnosed with ASD and begins interventions, the better their long term outcome.

☝️ Keep in mind: the signs we mention here are non-specific and can be part of normal development, or part of a different disorder altogether. ⚠️ ASD requires a comprehensive evaluation that looks at ALL the domains of a child's development. If you have any concerns, just start the conversation with your pediatric provider 😉.
