'Shootin the Bull'

This is an 8 x 10 oil painting I recently completed of a classmate from school we went to about 40 years ago, but just recently he's made an effort to get in touch, and renew our relationship. He sent me a photo of him working with another classmate of ours on a cattle ranch in Montana.

So I decided to thank him for his efforts and paint that photo. I intended to have it mailed to his hometown as a surprise for him when he returned from his Montana trip.

But shortly after he left that cattle ranch, he was involved in a near-death experience in a very bad motorcycle accident.

So I sent him a photo of this painting to lift his spirits in his hospital room, as he waits for his collapsed lung to heal enough to fly back to his hometown.

He really appreciated it. The painting is drying now, and I will mail it soon. It will probably get there about the same time he does.

The Essence of Apple

In this commission portrait, I sought to explore the boundary between technical precision and emotional resonance. My work with Studio Marquess (Mark Treick) is rooted in the philosophy of narrative hyperrealism, using graphite not merely to document a likeness, but to protect the 'essence' of the subject. By focusing on the intricate textures of the coat and the reflective depth of the eyes, I aim to elevate the pencil drawing from a preliminary sketch to a complete, powerful art form that captures a sense of dynamic stillness.

Strata

Layers of blue and yellow push against each other through fields of black and white, held in tension by strong cell formations that break the surface like strata in exposed rock.
