We kept things moody throughout this renovation to a midcentury house in Portland’s leafy southwest hills.

An expansive triple-glazed window at the Bridlemile living room brings a heritage maple tree into the space, providing an ever-changing focal point throughout the year. Minimal aluminum frames from and intentional details means nature is the star of the show here.

Heritage House at sunset.

Heritage House is a new single-family residence in the Southwest Washington countryside. Its gable roof is inspired by minimal gabled houses that define the architectural vernacular in Underdahl, Norway, a small fishing village on a fjord that is the ancestral hometown of the owners. Scandinavian details of the ancient village have been modernized and adapted to the Washington context.
