Pomeroy Elementary School
Dear Pomeroy Families,
Today, I am writing with a very heavy heart.
Our school community has lost one of our own. We lost a young student, a classmate, a friend, and a child who was deeply loved by his family and by many within our school community.
There are no words that can truly make sense of a loss like this, especially when it involves a child. Right now, our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with his family as they face something no family should ever have to endure. Out of respect for the family, I ask that we honor their privacy and allow them the space they need during this incredibly difficult time.
As a small community, we grieve together. Many of our students are hurting, confused, and trying to understand what has happened. Some children may want to talk about it, while others may not. Some may seem sad, angry, worried, or withdrawn. All of those reactions are normal.
As parents, the best thing we can do is be present. Listen when our children want to talk. Answer questions honestly and simply. Let them know it is okay to be sad and okay to not have all the answers. Most importantly, remind them they are loved and supported.
We know many students, families, and staff may want a place to gather and support one another. To help with that, Pomeroy School District will open the Junior/Senior High School building on Sunday, June 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Anyone who feels they need a place to be with others, talk, reflect, or simply not be alone is welcome. We will also provide resources for families that might be helpful as they navigate this difficult time. Local mental health providers will also be on campus should additional support be needed.
If you prefer to reach out to these supports privately here is the contact information:

As I have reflected on this loss today, I have been reminded how precious our children are and how important it is that we hold them a little closer. Please take time this weekend to be together, to listen, and to remind those you love how much they mean to you.
Our Pirate family is hurting, but we will get through this together. In the days ahead, we will continue to support our students, staff, and families while honoring the memory of a young boy who will always be part of our school community.
With a heavy heart,
Rachel Gwinn
