Rec 4 Vets

For the second consecutive weekend Rec4Vets has had the honor and fortune to benefit from a striped bass derby on the California Delta. Thank you to NorCal Fish Whisperers, their supporters and their sponsor for this opportunity. Without the support from these fantastic groups we wouldn’t be able to provide the experiences we do.

Once again Tawnya stayed behind and manned the booth, sharing what we do and helping to sign up new Veterans and Volunteers. I had the luxury of taking a Veteran fishing on our boat, reminding me exactly why we have continued this mission since our first event so many years ago. And while we didn’t qualify any fish for the derby (most were too big for the slot limit), we had a great time.

Last night, we were truly honored to receive a generous check from the California Striped Bass Association – Isleton Delta Chapter. The donation came from the proceeds of their raffles during last weekend’s Striped Bass Derby.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire CSBA community, every angler who participated, and all those who supported the Barry Canevaro Memorial Derby. Barry was a proud veteran himself, and we are deeply honored to be affiliated with both this meaningful event and the organization that made it possible.

Fundraising efforts like this make a tremendous difference. Without the dedication and generosity of groups like the CSBA, our work would be far more challenging.

Three years ago today, our community mourned the untimely passing of Randy Houston, President of Purple Heart Anglers (PHA).
It was Randy’s vision—“One Veteran, one boat, and a bag lunch”—that laid the foundation for PHA and created a lasting legacy of service. His dedication and passion inspired Rec4Vets to carry that torch forward and continue the mission.
Together, the two organizations have provided meaningful outdoor experiences for more than 1,000 Veterans on the water and in the field, made possible by the generous support of our dedicated volunteers and supporters.
Today, we honor Randy’s memory, reflect on how it all began, and remain committed to advancing this important mission in the years ahead.

On behalf of the Board of Directors for Purple Heart Anglers, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that Randy Houston, the Founder and President of PHA passed away unexpectedly yesterday. Saying Randy will be missed is an understatement.
