SAPA Welcomes Reopening of J-1 Visa Appointments for Physicians, Urges National Interest Waiver for Sudanese Doctors

The Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) welcomes the U.S. administration’s recent decision to reopen and prioritize J-1 visa appointments for international physicians. This move comes at a critical time, helping many begin their U.S. residency programs by the July 1 deadline.

These physicians play a key role in supporting healthcare in underserved and rural areas. They are well-qualified and entering fields where doctors are urgently needed.

SAPA sees this decision as a practical and compassionate step. We hope the same flexibility will be shown through national interest exemptions for Sudanese physicians and others affected by current travel bans. Getting them here on time is essential for public health and hospital staffing.

We thank the administration for this support and encourage continued efforts to help international doctors contribute to the U.S. healthcare system.
