Lugubrious [loo-GOO-bree-us]
(adj.)
- Theatrically mournful; characterized by excessive sadness; doleful; dismal.

From Latin “lugubris” (mournful, doleful, pertaining to mourning) from “lugere” (to mourn) from PIE root “leug-” (to break; to cause pain)

Used in a sentence:
“The new girl would seem to be goth by all outward signs: deliberately dark fashion choices, and a lugubrious comportment worthy of Morticia Addams.”

Formerly also "lugubrous"
———
Not to be confused with “Salubrious” meaning “Favorable to or promoting health or well-being.”
