BUTLER COUNTY RESIDENTS: Your voice matters.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office participates in the federal 287(g) program, which allows local deputies to assist with certain immigration enforcement activities.

For many community members, this raises important questions about public trust, community safety, the role of local law enforcement, and the impact these agreements can have on immigrant families living in our neighborhoods.

The Butler County Commissioners hold public meetings every other Wednesday, and residents have the opportunity to speak directly to elected officials during public comment.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 2026
📍 Butler County Government Center
124 W Diamond Street
Butler, PA 16001

🕙 10:00 AM

Butler County residents may speak for up to 3 minutes. If you are willing to come speak that would be great! You can also donate your speaking time to Amanda, a community member personally impacted by ICE in Butler County. If you are unable to attend, you can still contact the Butler County Commissioners and Sheriff Mike Slupe to share your thoughts.

A new analysis by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette found that nearly one-third of ICE arrests in Pennsylvania between August 2025 and March 2026 were classified as "collateral arrests," meaning the person detained was not the original target of the enforcement operation.

Perhaps even more striking, the reporting found that three out of four people detained in these collateral arrests had never been charged with or convicted of a crime.

The article highlights the story of Luis Mayancela, a young father who had spent years pursuing legal pathways to remain in the US. Although he was not the intended target of an ICE operation, he was detained and spent months in immigration detention before eventually being released on bond.

Luis's detention changed the perspective of a friend who had previously supported promises to deport "the worst of the worst," only to watch someone he knew personally become caught up in the system.

For months, families have been sharing stories of loved ones being detained despite having no criminal record, pursuing legal pathways, or simply being present during an enforcement action. This reporting provides important data that helps us better understand the scale of what many communities have already been experiencing firsthand.

Our immigrant neighbors are not criminals. They are parents, workers, students, business owners, friends, and community members. The decisions being made around immigration enforcement are affecting real families in our neighborhoods every day.
