Iron oxide is a result of air and hot water mixing inside the pipes of an untreated hydronic system and oxidizing, causing components such as heat emitters, pipework and heat exchangers to corrode internally. This results in micron-sized iron oxide particles circulating around the system. The particles quickly collect in areas of low flow to form a black sludge that, even in small quantities, can cause damage. This is especially true for today’s high-efficiency boilers and pumps, which require the highest water quality for peak performance.
