Another successful Community Vision Day at the UPMC Vision Institute!
This past weekend, the Department of Ophthalmology welcomed community members for a day dedicated to expanding access to essential vision care. Through screenings, education, and personalized support, volunteers helped connect individuals with resources that can make a meaningful difference in their eye health and quality of life.
Thank you to the physicians, trainees, staff, and volunteers whose dedication made this event possible.

We had such a wonderful day at Montessori Academy! đ
Our CORAP outreach team, led by Dr. Anna Gushchin, hosted an educational workshop for students ranging from preschool to 5th grade, covering everything from the anatomy of the eye to how our brains process what we see â and why some of us need glasses.
Students got hands-on with real tools: they used an Electromagnetic Reader to measure light sources in the room, observed how light changes pupil size, and explored the role that nutrition and outdoor time play in healthy eye development. Older students had the amazing opportunity to look inside their own eyes using our iCare DRS+ retina camera, identifying structures like veins, arteries, and the optic nerve.
Every student received a basic eye screening, and parents of any students who needed follow-up received a referral to ensure they get the care they need.
Bringing eye health education directly into classrooms is one of the most meaningful things we do â because healthy vision starts early. đ
