The Pittsburgh Human Rights City Alliance joined a global coalition of nearly 270 advocacy groups in an open letter urging UN Member States to uphold, preserve, and strengthen international treaties in response to U.S. government efforts to undo international legal protections for refugees.
The organizations signing the open letter span the globe and include human rights organizations, faith-based groups, humanitarian, and refugee assistance organizations from every region of the world. The Human Rights City Alliance did not disinvite members of the BDS coalition from attending our annual human rights cookout. All supporters of human rights are welcome, and we whole-heartedly support the rights of Palestinians. All struggles for human rights are interconnected.
Our mission is to bring attention and action to the human rights and basic needs of people in our region. The cookout is a space where we encourage people to get involved with the local organizing for, e.g., housing rights, gender and racial justice, and economic needs of people here at home. This intention shapes our selection of partners and co-sponsors of this event. Too often, national political debates and mass media overshadow the urgent needs of our immediate neighbors. And too many people in this country believe that human rights apply to other countries, not this one. Politicians use racism and the Palestinian cause to divide and distract us. They use this political wedge to keep us from uniting for justice and equity.
We regret the error that led to this situation, and we call upon those working for justice and peace to focus more of our attention and political energies on the needs of the people with whom we share this city. Only working together can we end classism and the racism that denies dignity and justice for all.
