Some memories never fade.
This photo was taken when I was 16 years old in Las Vegas at the International World Karate Championships. I was competing on one of the biggest stages in martial arts and had just come off a very tough fight. It wasn’t the result I had hoped for, and like many young competitors, I was disappointed.
Then something happened I’ll never forget.
My hero, Benny Urquidez, had watched my match. Afterward, he took the time to talk with me and said, “You have a lot of heart.”
Those words meant more to me than any trophy.
Martial arts teaches us that success isn’t always measured by wins and losses. Sometimes it’s about courage, perseverance, and stepping onto the mat when the odds are against you. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my life and continues to shape how I teach today at Dojo Matrix.
To all of our students: keep showing up, keep learning, and keep fighting with heart. The victories will come, but character is built in the challenges.
