BINGO BLOG BONUS PUZZLE for Feb. 14, 2020

by Jeff Kastner

Happy Valentine’s Day to all my fellow Scrabble clubbers and word lovers! Let me also wish everyone a Happy President’s Day holiday weekend. Since our regular Club meeting of Feb. 12th was cancelled by Larry due to multiple illnesses, I am filling the gap with bonus questions relating to these holiday celebrations. So, whether you are in love, or feeling sick, or just plain lovesick, the quiz questions below should prove to be fun and instructive.

As usual, all the answers are given below. Feel free to comment here on Facebook...and don't forget to show your "LOVE" for this bonus blog!

Quiz #1: Let’s begin simply with everyone’s favorite archer, CUPID. It’s a valid Scrabble word, defined as: a naked, winged representation of the Roman god of love. What is the anagram of CUPID?

Quiz #2: Starting with the word VALENTINE, how many 7- and 8-letter bingos can you find from within its 9 letters?

For extra credit, what is the anagram of VALENTINE?

Quiz #3: “Will you accept this rose?” The bingo ROSETTE is defined as: an ornament resembling a rose. What is the anagram of ROSETTES?

And, what is the anagram of ROSETTED (the adjectival form of ROSETTE)?

Quiz #4: Let’s test your knowledge pertaining to matters of the HEART. It is helpful to know that HEART is defined as a verb, meaning: HEARTEN (v., to give courage).

What is the anagram of HEARTEN?

What is the anagram of HEARTENS?

What is the anagram of HEARTING?

What is the anagram of HEARTIEST?

What is the anagram of HEARTSOME?

Finally, what is the longest Scrabble word ending with HEART?

Quiz #5: What is the longest word beginning with KISS?

Quiz #6: What are the three 8-letter bingos from within the 9 letters of CHOCOLATE?

Quiz #7: TRUELOVE is a Scrabble word meaning: a sweetheart. What is the anagram of TRUELOVE?

Quiz #8: What is the longest word you can think of that ends with AMOUR?

Quiz #9: As I was sipping my CAMERON’S brand coffee this morning, I couldn’t help but notice that CAMERONS anagrams to ROMANCES! Aside from the -S, what are the other hooks (front or back) for ROMANCE?

Quiz #10: What is the only tile that combines with the 7 letters of FLOWERS to produce an 8-letter bingo?

Quiz #11: What is the longest word ending with LOVER?

Quiz #12: What are the two 10-letter bingoes in the phrase “A PRESIDENT”?

BONUS QUESTION:
Speaking of illness, I was surprised to see that CORONAVIRUS is actually a valid Scrabble word. And it even has an anagram that you all have heard of before. So, sink your teeth into this meaty bonus question and try to come up with the anagram for CORONAVIRUS.

QUIZ SOLUTIONS:

Quiz #1: CUPID = PUDIC, adj., of or pertaining to the pudendum (the external ge***al organs of a woman).

Quiz #2: Starting with the 9 letters of VALENTINE, there is only one 8-letter bingo possible: VENETIAN (a flexible window screen).

There are seven possible 7’s: ELATIVE (noun, also takes an R- front-hook); ENLIVEN; LENIENT (an adj. only, so cannot be pluralized, but note that LENIENT + S = SENTINEL, a verb); LINEATE (adj., marked with lines, takes -D only); NAIVETE (also spelt NAIVETY); VEINLET (similar is VEINULET); and VENTAIL (the adjustable front of a medieval helmet, it takes an A- front-hook).

VALENTINE = LEVANTINE, a cloth of twilled silk.

Quiz #3: ROSETTES = TETROSES. Although it looks like it should be an adjective, TETROSE is a noun, defined as: a sugar whose molecules contain four carbon atoms.

ROSETTED = TETRODES, types of electron tubes.

Quiz #4: HEARTEN = EARTHEN, adj., made of earth.

HEARTENS = HASTENER

HEARTING = EARTHING and INGATHER (v., to gather). FYI, the anagram of INGATHERS is HANGRIEST!

HEARTIEST = EARTHIEST and HESITATER.

HEARTSOME = HORSEMEAT.

The longest Scrabble word ending with HEART is PURPLEHEART, a flowering plant.

Quiz #5: The longest word beginning with KISS is KISSOGRAM. It is a portmanteau of “kissing telegram,” a message delivered along with a kiss. Interestingly, this term can also be spelt “KISSAGRAM,” but that one is only good in Collins. However, there is a legit 9-letter bingo using the letters of “KISSAGRAM,” namely: SKIAGRAMS (pictures made up of shadows or outlines).

Quiz #6: From within the 9 tiles of CHOCOLATE here are the three possible 8’s: CATECHOL (a chemical used in photography), COLOCATE (v., to place two or more housing units in close proximity), and OOTHECAL (pertaining to OOTHECA, an egg case of certain insects). Note that CHOCOLATE takes -S and -Y back-hooks. Plus, the alt. sp. for CHOCOLATEY is CHOCOLATY. They are comparative adjs., and so CHOCOLATIER and CHOCOLATIEST are both good. In fact, CHOCOLATIER is a noun (think W***y Wonka!).

Quiz #7: TRUELOVE = REVOLUTE, adj., rolled back or downward. REVOLUTE is the front-hook for the noun EVOLUTE.

Quiz #8: The longest word ending with AMOUR is BEGLAMOUR. It’s an alt. sp. of BEGLAMOR, to dazzle with glamor.

Quiz #9: The bingo ROMANCE takes a front-hook B- for BROMANCE, a close nonsexual relationship between men. The back-hooks include -D and -R, for ROMANCED and ROMANCER.

Quiz #10: FLOWERS + T = FELWORTS, which happen to be flowering plants!

Quiz #11: The longest word ending with LOVER is SPILLOVER, an anagram of OVERSPILL.

Quiz #12: The tiles A PRESIDENT = PEDANTRIES (ostentatious displays of knowledge) and PEDESTRIAN. Note that PRESIDENT is the front-hook for RESIDENT.

ANSWER TO BONUS QUESTION:
CORONAVIRUS = CARNIVOROUS, pertaining to meat-eating or the predatory instincts of certain wild animals. (Did the little hint I dropped help you any?)

Feel free to share your ideas and thoughts in the Comments section, and I’ll be seeing you next time.
