Phoenix Zoo
On World Oceans Day, the Phoenix Zoo is proud to support nautilus conservation! 🌊
Nautiluses are deep-ocean cephalopods, living in reef habitats up to 700m below the water's surface. Their specialized shells allow them to withstand the pressure of the deep ocean. Unfortunately, their shells have led them to become overharvested for the ornamental shell trade, causing some species to become threatened. Our Conservation and Science Manager, Whitney Heuring, works with Save The Nautilus biologists to conduct nautilus research in Fiji. The data collected are used to learn more about nautilus populations, so that we can better conserve and protect them.
