Although this movie was not directed by Quentin Tarantino, it is still considered part of the Tarantino universe. The first clue to this is Lee Donowitz, the grandson of Sergeant Donnie Donowitz from Inglourious Basterds (2009) (confirmed by Tarantino). The second piece of evidence is the fact that Mr. White in Reservoir Dogs (1992) mentions working with a girl named "Alabama".

A hit on Broadway, also starring Katherine Hepburn, before it graced the big screen, George Cukor’s sophisticated rom-com about reporters who crash a society wedding was the cure to Hepburn’s “box office poison” reputation. Guess we should also credit one part Cary Grant and one part James Stewart.

The Hong Kong film industry's reliance on period dramas and wuxia fantasies had persisted for too long. Jackie Chan's disappointing foray into American filmmaking with The Protector (1985) spurred him to create Police Story, a pioneering contemporary action film that showcased his talents as both star and director. The film's memorable opening car chase and its bone-shattering shopping center finale – affectionately referred to as 'Glass Story' by the stunt team – have cemented its influence on the action genre, setting it apart from countless imitators.

Akira Kurosawa made this commercial and accessible film as a way to repay Toho Studios for allowing him to make riskier, more artistic fare such as Rashomon (1950). It was later one of the greatest inspirations for George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), which originally started out as a sci-fi themed remake of this film set in the distant future, similar to how The Magnificent Seven (1960) was a Western-themed remake of Kurosawa's Shichinin No Samurai (1954). However Star Wars went through so many drafts and rewrites that the final version of the film bares almost no resemblance to The Hidden Fortress. The inspiration can also be seen in Star Wars: Episode I-The Phantom Menace (1999), which shares certain plot points with this film.
