Introducing the dizi. 🪈

The dizi is a Chinese side-blown flute known for its distinctive buzzing sound, which is created by a thin reed membrane that covers one of the holes in the middle of the instrument. The use of a membrane was first recorded in the 12th century. By the 16th century, the dizi had become a leading instrument in regional ensembles and theatrical traditions.

Hear Eddie Chia-Hao Hsu, our curator for Asia and Oceania, demonstrate the iconic sounds of this staple Chinese instrument.

See this dizi and more than 100 other rare flutes in The Magical Flute: Beauty, Enchantment, and Power.
