June is Pride Month! Pride month celebrates the history and culture of the LGBTQ+ community. We have great books celebrating the LGBTQ+ community in our catalog all year long, but if you're looking for a place to start, find these titles on BARD or request them from our librarian today!
Atmosphere: A Love Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid (DB 129909, DB 132477 en español, BR 26357 in process) - Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances. That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA's space shuttle program. Joan begins training at Houston's Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates. As the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe. Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, it all changes in an instant.
Rainbow Cattle Co.: Liberation, Inclusion, and the History of Gay Rodeo by Nicholas Villanueva Jr. (DB 128316) - Rainbow Cattle Co. reveals a history of gay liberation through rodeo, which from the mid-1970s provided a safe space where LGBTQ athletes could focus on their sport and evolved into a highly successful philanthropic organization by the end of the twentieth century. This intersectional study of LGBTQ athletes, heteronormativity, Western history, and sport builds on scholarship from ethnic studies, critical sports studies, sociology, and history.
