Remembering Ruth A. Power, Radioman 3rd Class
Ruth A. Power joined the Navy in March 1944, attending boot camp at Hunter College, New York. From boot camp, she went to Oxford College, Oxford, Ohio, where she was trained to copy Morse Code. This was a grueling course where they were so over-trained that they could carry on a conversation and still copy code coming over their earphones. After screening to make sure she passed all security clearances, she was sent to Bainbridge Island, Washington, where she was trained to copy Japanese code on a special typewriter called a ‘mill’.
From there, she was sent to Imperial Beach, California—just 6 miles from Tijuana, Mexico. The ‘code interceptors’ worked 24 hours on duty and 24 hours off duty, copying code sent from Japanese radio stations. The Japanese ‘messages‘ were sent to Washington D.C. for classification and decoding. When WWII ended in 1945, Ruth Ann returned to civilian life and obtained both a Bachelors and Masters degrees.
