The US government now holds over $3.6B in Bitcoin. Most of the Bitcoin the government holds today was seized during the 2016 Bitfinex hack where about 120,000 Bitcoins were stolen from the exchange.
The government also may hold some Bitcoin from when the Silk Road was taken down back in 2013. Most of the Bitcoin were sold at auction at the time to investor Tim Draper.
