For years I struggled with undiagnosed Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and hypothyroidism. Looking back, I’m convinced I had it since teen years, which explains a lot of the sudden “teenage angst” I experienced at around 16 years of age. The constant low grade fatigue and depression became my normal, over time, and I just got used to it, to be honest. Fast forward to medical school many years later…I then really felt the effects of this condition physically and emotionally, and had a year long bout of heart palpitations and vertigo that baffled several doctors, including a cardiologist I saw. It took many frustrating trips to several different doctors to finally get the true cause (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) properly diagnosed and optimally treated. I ended up figuring it out myself, as a 3rd year medical student, when I wandered into a Basha’s grocery store and saw their mobile lab offering bloodwork that patients could order for themselves. I ordered a full thyroid panel and when got the results back, it was clearly a case of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (high antibody levels seen) and by that point, an obviously lower functioning thyroid with hypothyroidism showing up on the bloodwork. But I was so relieved to finally have a diagnosis for all the elusive symptoms I’d been experiencing for decades by that point!!! But then I started to see that it wasn’t as simple as “take this pill and you’ll be better”. I went to different doctors for treatment and kept being told “your labs are normal, your thyroid is fine now” even though I didn’t feel fine yet at all…I felt better than I did before treatment, but I definitely didn’t feel totally well. My hair was thin and constantly falling out in clumps in the shower. It wasn’t until I found the right doctor who would really listen and make adjustments on my medications that I FINALLY started to feel better. So you can bet I became passionate about helping others with thyroid disease after my own personal experience as a patient with thyroid disease!! After graduating medical school I trained extensively with a board certified endocrinologist who had been in practice for over 30 years. I wanted to learn as much as I could from an experienced hormone specialist in order to fully understand all aspects of hormonal conditions and imbalances that elude doctors and frustrate patients. Drawing upon my own personal experience as a patient and my medical training as a new physician, I passionately dedicated my practice to natural endocrinology and to hormone optimizing and balancing. I discovered while practicing that hormonal imbalances are often the root cause of weight issues, as well as the missing link to wellness, preventive medicine and overall health. And most importantly, I began to realize that keeping hormones optimized is the key to true preventive wellness and staying healthy for your whole life– so that age related degenerative diseases are kept at bay. When hormones are deficient as we age, we become more susceptible to the age related diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis, Altzeimers, dementia and cancers. Optimizing hormones as we age will not only help us feel better and look younger, it protects our health as we age and promotes healthy longevity! What an amazingly powerful effect they have on health– much better than any drug out there, right??
