The Tia Foundation
Most communities rely on infrequent visits from volunteer doctors. Using a “teach them to fish” model, the Tia Foundation trains and equips Community Health Workers elected by their neighbors to respond to emergencies and provide basic preventative care in remote communities of rural Mexico, where there are no doctors. At our recent project in Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco, a smaller-than-expected clinic turned into an opportunity to extend our impact beyond clinic walls to provide critical interventions where they were needed most.
Among those we reached was an elderly woman living in a retirement home who was experiencing leg pain after a fall. Our team recognized the signs of a more serious injury and insisted on immediate imaging. Doctors confirmed a fractured femur and early signs of an embolism. Because of this timely intervention, she survived.
Thank you to our volunteers, supporters, healthcare partners, and community leaders who make moments like these possible.

At the Tia Foundation, every partnership begins by listening.
Before launching a program, we meet with residents, local leaders, and healthcare workers to better understand the challenges affecting community health. We learn about issues ranging from diabetes and malnutrition to unsafe water and environmental hazards.
We also work to uncover the root causes behind these issues. In one community facing extraordinarily high rates of kidney failure, our team discovered that industrial contamination in the local river was impacting the drinking water families relied on every day. Without community engagement and data collection, the source of the crisis may have remained hidden.
During each visit, our medical teams provide care while volunteers gather important information on health, nutrition, housing, water access, and chronic illness. These insights help us work alongside communities to design programs focused on treatment, education, training, and long-term wellbeing.
By listening first, we can help build healthier people, stronger families, and more resilient communities.
