What Your Volunteers Need to Be Happy
simbock.com

1 Volunteers Want You to Be Prepared for Them
Many of us at some point have worked in the temp world. A common experience is to be sent to an office to work only to find that the office is unprepared. So you sit around trying to look busy when you are actually twiddling your thumbs.

2 Volunteers Want to Feel Welcomed
Act as though your volunteer is a guest in your home. Show him/her around. Introduce him/her to your staff and other volunteers, have your executive director drop by and say hello and thanks. Don't let your volunteer feel uncomfortable for a minute.

3 Volunteers Want Good Training
Even if the task assigned is a simple one, take the time to explain it, demonstrate it, and mentor the volunteer through the first few hours. Provide a buddy, another volunteer who is experienced, to help the new one.

4 Volunteers Want to Do Interesting Work
Most volunteers are willing to roll their sleeves up and do physical labor as long as it is meaningful. But grunt work is out. Do not use volunteers to do the tasks your staff doesn't want to do.

5 Volunteers Want to Know How Much Time the Job Will Take
Everyone is busier than ever, and many volunteers may only have time for short term assignments. Project-oriented, rather than ongoing, tasks seem to work particularly well.

6 Volunteers Want to Be Appreciated
Tell your volunteers frequently that they are doing a good job.

7 Volunteers Want You to Communicate With Them Well and Often
Regular communication is motivating for volunteers while the lack of it is one of the chief reasons volunteers become dissatisfied.

8 Volunteers Want to Know That They Are Making a Difference
Let your volunteers know how they are making a difference.

9 Volunteers Want to Be Socially Connected
Volunteering is a great way for many people to socialize, so provide the opportunity to do so.

10 Volunteers Want to Learn Something New
Anyone who is willing to volunteer for an organization is likely to have a healthy curiosity and willingness to try new things. Indeed, many volunteers get involved with causes just so they can learn new skills or about interesting topics and issues.

Why Become an Animal Shelter Volunteer

It’s a feel good thing. Being an animal shelter volunteer at the CCSPCA makes you feel like you are doing the right thing. You are contributing to the solution, which makes you feel good about the work you are doing. Part of the job as a volunteer is that you work with the animals so they can become adoptable.

You instantly see the results of your labor. As you begin to work with an animal, you can see a change in their personality almost instantly.

Animal shelter volunteers are needed! We have a constant intake of animals. Each one of these animals needs your love and care. Your help will never go unnoticed and you will never feel like you aren’t helping in some way. There will always be a dog to walk, a cat to groom or some animal to give your love to.

Being an animal shelter volunteer is good for your emotional, physical, and mental health. It is scientifically proven that spending time with animals helps lower your stress levels and blood pressure. It will also keep you active, especially if you prefer to walk dogs.

You gain professional and life experiences. Volunteering is a great way to try out a new career or to try something new.

Volunteering encourages civic responsibility. By volunteering you get to contribute to a cause you care about.

You learn responsibility and time management. We expect our volunteers to behave in a professional manner. That means being on time to your scheduled shifts and notifying us when you might be late. Being a responsible person who manages their time well will make a valuable employee and a well-rounded person. It also shows that you have taken the initiative to dedicate your time to a specific cause.

How to Become an Amazing Dog Shelter Volunteer

The volunteers are considered as the backbone of an animal shelter. Volunteers are generally counted on to manage or walk the dogs in different types of weather as well as in cleaning up their mess. They are also able to socialize with puppies through cuddling or play. The best volunteers are known for their determination and dedication.

Tips to Become a Good Dog Shelter Volunteer

Some great tips to become an amazing volunteer are as follows:

Listen and Do
There is excitement and anticipation in a dog shelter as a new volunteer begins his or her first shift at a facility. Whether the person is a seasoned volunteer or a dog owner, it is important to remember that most of the shelter staff are protective of their animals.

Go Beyond
Most of the time, volunteers come by a dog shelter, walk the dogs, and then go ahead with their day. In dog shelters, the staff may have a lot of load for their shift and in such a scenario, an extra set of hands means a lot.

Keep the Date
Staff at a dog shelter rely on dependable and punctual volunteers. In case you do not show up, it may lead to a lot of problems and extra workload for the staff. While volunteering at a dog shelter, make sure that you show up on time and are ready to work. However, in case of an emergency, make sure to give a quick call to the dog shelter at the earliest.

Read the Rules
In an animal shelter, rules are set for the safety of the staff, volunteers, as well as the dogs. While volunteering at a dog shelter, make sure that you are aware of all the rules and adhere to them.

Love the Work
A volunteer should love the work that he or she is volunteering for. Being a volunteer at an animal shelter is much more than just walking a dog. As a volunteer, you should be a part of the social development as well as the emotional well-being of the dog.

Conclusion

Volunteers play a major role in a dog shelter. Hence, one should make sure to follow the above points.
