Repost from U.S. Coast Guard New York

It is not at all unusual for the beginning of a military career journey to start hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of miles from home. For Rocco Hartfuss, it started about two hours away...depending on the time of day and the traffic.

Raised in the suburbs of Philly, Hartfuss, electing to forgo an additional four years of education after graduating high school, decided to consider the advice of his dad’s friends and work colleagues at the Department of Customs and Border Protection who suggested a career in either the Air Force or the Coast Guard.

Suffice to say, ending up in Cape May, New Jersey, he OBVIOUSLY made the correct choice.

Just about two months post graduation now, Hartfuss finds himself at Station New York, the Coast Guard’s largest Boat Station; and a station which just so HAPPENS to be about two hours from home...depending, of course, upon the time of day…and the traffic.

Beyond being obviously brilliant for hooking up the path to quick weekend runs home to hang with his sister Addison, and his parents, and to grab cheesesteaks - because, apparently, that’s all that matters in Philly - Hartfuss is also particularly cognizant of what he wants to do in the Coast Guard, and is ready to embrace what lies ahead. We know this because he noted that even though he hasn’t been on a Search and Rescue (SAR) case yet, the shipmates he sails with every day have - and it’s something he can’t wait to be a part of; because all he wants to do is help people…and save lives.
