1. Choose places with solid infrastructure, good public transit, establish tourism industry, and plenty of recent positive reviews from solo women travelers.
2. Share your itinerary and accommodation with at least one trusted person. Keep this person updated with names of every single person you meet and hang out while there, and put it in writing. I also make sure I am sharing my location on more than one device with at least three people back home.
3. Book your first few nights in advance, but in two separate bookings with free cancellations. That way, if you decide not to stay there for any reason, you can cancel and book somewhere else after you arrive.
4. When traveling solo, it is NOT “just a hotel.” Book a place that you would actually enjoy staying in. Some days you will be tired, and it’s nice to have a place you look forward to relaxing in at the end of a long day.
5. Get cash at the airport. Even cashless societies sometimes refuse foreign cards, but cash always comes in handy.
6. Arrive during waking hours when possible. Getting your bearings is much easier and safer when people are up and about.
8. Don’t question your gut, and don’t be afraid to offend people by leaving if something feels off.
9. Get an eSIM before you arrive or at the airport!
10. I always carry a power bank when traveling because you just never know, and everything is on my phone.
