It also is used to prevent and treat respiratory infections caused by influenza A virus. Giacino et al (New England Journal of Medicine, 2012) report on an international, multicenter, randomized controlled study which showed that Amantadine improved the rate of functional recovery in patients with post-traumatic disorders of consciousness (persistive vegetative state or minimally conscious state) when given for 4 weeks at 4-16 weeks after traumatic brain injury.
