If you are a Boomer, Gen X, or elder Millennial, hear me clearly: we are not just watching history unfold. We are living witnesses to it. Some of the most formative lessons of my life came from sitting at the feet of women who had stories the textbooks never bothered to print. Stories about labor. About sacrifice. About childhoods cut short so families could eat. Those narratives shaped me. That’s the oral tradition. That’s survival. We descend from storytellers. From memory keepers. From people who understood that if it wasn’t written down, you carried it anyway. When conversations surface about erased Black communities, I don’t stop at the headlines. I think about Florida. I think about land cultivated by Black hands long before it was packaged and sold as luxury. I think about segregated neighborhoods that were built, displaced, and built again. Because we have always known how to rebuild. And here is the charge: document the stories while the storytellers are still here. Ask questions. Press record. Write the names down.
