The Third Circuit has gained national attention in the past year after two controversial picks joined the court—Emil Bove and Jennifer Mascott. In a new ruling striking down New Jersey's assault weapon ban, pulled back the curtain a little bit on current internal court dynamics.

To find out more about the court's alignment and decision making, reporter Charles Toutant spoke with Arthur Hellman, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law who studies federal appeals courts.

"The takeaway for lawyers is you should make your best legal arguments on the precedents and the other law, and not assume anything about the judges," Hellman said.
