I started Going Inward Wellness as a way of rebranding mental health in the African American community. Too often, I found myself and others in my community suffering silently, or worse out loud. I wanted to do away with the concept that therapy is for “those people over there,” when it is really about individuals finding personal meaning. Through Going Inward Wellness, I offer people the opportu

I had fun this morning recording a chair yoga sequence for a group of Black women educators. Followed by helping to edit an international call to action for yogis. Daily I am reminded that yoga has the ability to liberate and oppress. Whether the discussion is yoga or mindfulness, I cannot act as if these practices have not been impacted and shaped by global white supremacy. As a keeper of these wisdom traditions, I understand my role comes with responsibility and labor. This understanding offers me no bypass as a Black woman born in N. America.

Of late, I have been asking myself and others, how are you accounting for the insidious nature of white supremacy, how are you accounting for white supremecy in things we deem as “good” or “right”? When it comes to yoga, the truth is, there has been co-optation; the truth is, there has been whitewashing; the truth is, there has been apropriation; the truth is, there has been spiritual bypassing; the truth is, there has been silence in the face of contradiction; the truth is, none of us are exempt.

Today, tomorrow and the following days, I commit to honoring these wisdom legacies by uplifting truth and naming harm. I am grateful for my community who help to keeps me accountable.
