Hey hey!!! I’m back! And I have my own studio space for the very first time! This is an extremely exciting moment and the beginning of something very special for me. Who can beat west-facing windows and golden hour light EVERY SINGLE DAY? Cheers to Day 1 and the rest to follow!

“Trump Dystopia” April, 2016. Artist as Activist, February 2017 in :

“Ridicule expressed through art has a particularly special place and power in the civilized world. The gaudy, the excessive and the grotesque elicit dialogue through the reaction they incite. Capturing reality through absurd satire makes it easier to laugh off the wrongdoing committed by the focus of such work. Politics, humor and hyperbole have always found this common ground in social commentary, precipitating controversial conversations. Argument is the basis of all progress and this brand of artwork is created with opinion, a visual manifestation of an individual’s concerns and convictions. Some will agree with the statement made, while some will vehemently disagree. It is this discrepancy in response which electrifies the progression of thought.
Back in April of 2016, I sat staring at 17 feet of blank butcher paper, framed by light on four panels on the third floor of Duke Hall. Without sketching or planning, I went straight to India ink and drew President Trump atop a podium of skulls, with all eyes pointing toward him. I stepped back and spent two hours calling friends and family, and anyone whose opinion I respected and asked them to explain what upset them about the presidential campaign up to that point, what baffled them and what scared them about our community and our country. Equipped with real-life inspirations, I applied my own perspective on some of the most recent happenings and stretched them to their ridiculous extremes. I wanted to make a piece that could not be ignored once an audience caught a glimpse, work that made a statement and demanded a reaction. It is rough, it is warped and crooked and it is messy. But it is honest.
Frighteningly, the ridicule I aimed at American politics is developing into something closer to reality. My hope is that this mural of caricatures and egregious tyranny makes you stop for a moment and comment on my unapologetic commentary. Whatever reaction you have to this Trump Dystopia, irrespective of the direction you lean politically, I would love to hear what you think...”
