This is probably going to ruffle some feathers, but NYC’s Jewish community is sounding the alarm about the Democratic mayoral nominee.

With two weeks until Election Day, prominent NYC rabbis are urging congregants not to vote for the candidate leading in polls. Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove of Conservative Park Avenue Synagogue told his congregation: “To be clear, unequivocal, and on the record, I believe this candidate poses a danger to the security of the New York Jewish community.”

Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch of Stephen Wise Free Synagogue accused him of “fanning the flames of intolerance” and urged him to “reconsider your long-held views of Israel’s right to exist.” During a Fox 5 interview, the candidate stated he opposes Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, saying “I’m not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion.”

Why this matters for NYC:

• NYC is home to the largest Jewish diaspora outside Israel - this isn’t fringe concern, it’s mainstream religious leadership
• The candidate co-founded Students for Justice in Palestine at Columbia and refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish state
• Multiple prominent rabbis are publicly warning their communities two weeks before Election Day - unprecedented move

New York City’s Jewish community has been foundational to this city’s identity for generations. When religious leaders from major synagogues are publicly warning their congregations about a mayoral candidate, voters deserve to understand why.
