Stay Informed of what to do During and After the Hurricane!
DURING
Stay alert to emergency notifications and alerts. If you reside in a mandatory evacuation area and local authorities instruct you to leave, evacuate immediately.
- For high winds, take cover in a designated storm shelter or an interior room.
- If you’re trapped by floodwaters, move to the highest level of the building. Avoid going into a closed attic, as rising floodwaters could trap you.
- Avoid walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters. Remember: "Turn Around, Don’t Drown!" Even six inches of swiftly moving water can knock you over, and just one foot of water can carry away your vehicle.
AFTER
Follow the guidance and specific instructions provided by local authorities.
- Exercise caution during cleanup activities. Wear protective gear, including appropriate face masks if dealing with mold or debris. Individuals with asthma, lung conditions, or weakened immune systems should avoid entering buildings with visible or noticeable water leaks or mold growth, even if they are not allergic to mold. Children should not participate in disaster cleanup tasks.
- Always wear protective clothing and work with a partner.
- Avoid touching electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. If possible and safe, turn off electricity at the main breaker or fuse box to prevent electric shock.
- Do not walk through floodwaters, as they may contain harmful pathogens, debris, chemicals, waste, or wildlife. Floodwaters can also be electrically charged by downed or underground power lines.
- Reserve phone calls for emergencies, as phone lines may be overloaded or unavailable after a disaster. Use text messages or social media to communicate with family and friends instead.
- Take photos of any property damage and contact your insurance company for support.
