General information
The Boarders and Stewards of the Monastery (BSM) is a charitable organization founded in 1994 to care for the historic Monastery Complex buildings and grounds in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, and to promote horsemanship in the Park's Wissahickon Valley.

BSM is the caretaker of the Monastery facilities under contract with the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust and is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
Kitchens Lane Stables, Inc. is the company engaged by BSM to manage the operations of Monastery Stables.
The Philadelphia Saddle Club (PSC) is a unique organization where equestrians can enjoy horses without the responsibility of being a horse owner.
PSC horses live at Monastery Stables, a historic 22-stall boarding facility on Kitchens Lane in West Mount Airy, Philadelphia. The Monastery is situated just a short trail ride away from Forbidden Drive.
Club members range from 32 to 90 years of age. Most are accomplished equestrians who enjoy riding along the trails of the Wissahickon Valley, a 1,800-acre gorge along the Wissahickon Creek in Fairmount Park.
Many PSC riders also enjoy dressage, jumping, driving and ring riding.
MEMBERSHIP
PSC has 15 members and 5 horses, and there is often a waiting list for membership. Club members work collectively to care for the horses. Good communication skills, a collaborative and consultative way of being, and a sense of humor are highly valued!
Our horses are turned out daily from morning to late afternoon. They are fed hay three times a day and a custom feed mix twice a day. Rubber-matted stalls are bedded in shavings and mucked daily by Monastery barn staff.
Benefits:
Members can ride as many times a week as they wish, and can reserve a horse at a specific time once a week (twice if one reservation is for a lesson).
Since most of our members are working professionals, there is almost always a horse available to ride.
Requirements:
Members must be at least 18 years old.
Initiation fee: $400
Monthly dues: $300
Riders must be capable of independently grooming and tacking their horse
Hard hats are required.
Each horse has his or her own bridle. PSC has saddles, but some riders prefer to use their own saddle.
