I just brought home my next foster from - Sammy, an eight month old puppy who was hit by a car. He was found bleeding from his mouth and unable or unwilling to walk when he first arrived at ACCT. The Richard Lichter Foundation decided to pay for Sammy’s medical care and ACCT transported the pup to Penn Vet for surgery. I picked him up yesterday and brought him home where he’ll be staying with me for 1-3 months as his bones heal. It takes a village right?

I’m struck by the stark difference in Sammy’s care compared to my friend’s care when he was hit by a car on a bicycle. The car left my friend on the side of the road, just like Sammy, but no finder came to help my friend. Instead, he had to limp to the nearest hospital which was 20 minutes away. There was no foundation that offered to pay his medical bill. My friend, a young Black man, didn’t have a village to give him a soft place to land.

We can point the finger at Republicans & how they’re gutting programs like Medicaid & the Child Tax Credit but us Democrats are just as guilty with our apathy. But which is more deadly? A party putting on a fascist attack or an apathetic party who won’t play defense? If we want to build a system that fosters community & care - it starts with us, on the ground, caring for others on the ground.

Slow down the car. Pull over when you see a human or dog hit. Offer mutual aid. Lend a hand. Foster a dog. Vote. Involve yourself somehow. In this moment of time in global history, we’re all being called in.

Having pets teaches us about empathy, body language, consent, and responsibility. They create opportunities for us to get physically active and socialize with them and each other through fur baby connections.
