Rice Dumplings with Coconut-Jaggery filling

Today I have for you a little piece of home. These steamed rice dumplings filled with a delicious mixture of grated coconut and jaggery are a favorite South Indian snack/sweet. Often had as a teatime snack or as a bite of sweetness for breakfast they are loved by all.

Growing up I remember my dad would make these for us with leftover string hoppers dough. He would take the easy route and stuff the dumpling with sugar and grated coconut.

These dumplings and vegan and gluten free. They are a healthy and delectable after school snack too. These are best enjoyed warm. As it sits the rice flour tends to harden and will need to be re-steamed before having them.

Traditionally these are white, and ball-shaped stuffed with coconut and jaggery. They are called Kozhukatta. To make them more fun and gorgeous I mixed the colors to the rice flour while making the dough. I love how beautiful they turned out and tasted just perfect! Little hands couldn’t wait to grab a few.
