😿Dessie is a two year old cat who came to ACCT Philly on 6/1 after being hit by a car. He has a severely displaced, complete fracture of his right distal femur that requires surgical repair. Despite arriving in obvious pain, Dessie has shown just how sweet he truly is. He deserves the chance to heal and reveal even more of his wonderful personality in a loving environment. Due to his medical concerns, Dessie is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.
Medical
6/1 Vet Exam
He was panting on arrival due to stress and pain, but his breathing quickly returned to normal after pain medication was given. His abdomen was tense and difficult to fully assess. He was non-weight bearing on his right hind leg and hesitant to walk. X-rays revealed a severely displaced complete fracture of the right distal femur. He will require surgical repair as soon as possible, with amputation as a last resort option if surgery is not feasible.
Behavior
Staff 6/3
Dessie was laying down and was a little hesitant when I first reached in, but was tolerant of pets on his head and side.
Staff 6/2:
Very sweet and tolerant guy despite obvious pain.

😿Maddie is a true senior gentleman of 17, who was surrendered to ACCT after ongoing vomiting. While we haven't seen evidence of vomiting in our care, we discovered that Maddie has periodontal disease, a grade four heart murmur, and a cutaneous mass under his right eye. We also suspect that Maddie has early-stage renal disease, and he has been losing weight since entering the shelter.
In his kennel, Maddie is a little shy, but he perks up when approached with treats. He enjoys being petted, but particularly likes rubbing his own face into your hands. Maddie's owner notes paint a picture of a cat trying to express his discomfort in whatever ways that he can: by no longer acting friendly with the dog in the home, and by using his claws and teeth. But Maddie has been very tolerant with our staff, allowing physical exams and a blood-draw. The common stereotype of a "cranky old cat" may be charming, but not when those behaviors could be linked to underlying medical conditions.
We would love to see Maddie enjoy his golden years in comfort, somewhere he can be offered snacks and elect not to eat them--someplace where there is always a hand he can rub against.

Behavior
6/3 Staff
Maddie was on his shelf and remained there throughout our interaction. He was originally laying down, but then stood and raised his hind end into the pets. At some points his tail flicked back and forth as if he were beginning to get overstimulated, but he never reacted and remained tolerant of pets.
5/29 relayed to Staff by Owner
Cat has been throwing up for the past few days after eating. Has a growth on eye that started 3 months ago and had gotten bigger since. Cat can't jump up high anymore--they believe his back legs are having issues. Also, behavior has changed in the last year, mainly with client's mom, and resident dog who was once a close companion of Maddie. Owner reports Maddie will stalk their mother and latch onto her with claws and mouth, and that he has broken skin several times.

😿7 year old Little Momma was surrendered to ACCT with seven other cats on 4/23, following the passing of their owner. She was living indoors with a crowded home environment where she may have received little socialization. The cats were described by a family member as generally friendly and litter trained, with an adaptable but somewhat independent temperament. Little Momma is currently the last cat left from her household, and we can't be sure if the behaviors noted above were for the kittens from the group, or Little Momma herself. Little Momma initially allowed handling and appeared calm. She's displaying behaviors commonly associated with under-socialized cats, but these same behaviors are often seen in cats coming from loving homes who are not accustomed to such drastic changes in environment. This means it's hard to tell just how open to human friends Little Momma is; we don't know how she acts when she feels safe, or how much she eats when she's comfortable, or how big she can stretch when she's relaxed, and it does not set her up for success.
After her owner passed away, a family member had been coming to the house to feed and look after the cats, and it's clear that the change of environment has been hard on Little Momma ever since she arrived at ACCT in late April. We think that Little Momma would do best in a space with respectful cat friends, or as a working cat where she can choose her level of engagement with human friends.
Behavior
6/2 Staff
I went to say hello to Little Momma, and she was not very happy. She was lying down in her litter box, and hissed immediately & frequently at the sight of the fake hand. When I moved it slightly closer, she swatted at it a couple of times & moved back. Dilated pupils and airplane ears. I tried a few bubbles as well and she just hissed at me.
4/23 Staff
Intake nurse took patient out of feral den. Pt was allowing handling during that time. When pt tried to walk off examination table pt turned around to nurse and hissed. Nurse pulled back hands and pt took that time to jump off table and across cat intake room. Nurses stopped and let pt cool down in corner of room. Nurses asked for skilled assistance on catching cat. Pt ran back across room and under kennels. Pt was caught with a clam shell net. Taken straight to surgery for full check in.
Per her owner 4/23
Little Momma was noted to be fully litter-trained, is friendly towards strangers & fine with other cats.
