To our friends in Central Illinois: If the weather forecast is correct, we could be in for some rough weather this afternoon and into tomorrow morning. If we get the predicted high winds and hail, it is very likely that we will see the "storm chasers" show up within hours. They will start going through neighborhoods knocking on doors in an attempt to convince people they have storm damage. In my 50+ years of the insurance business I have never seen a single legitimate roofer/contractor that needs to go door-to-door looking for business. If you get the storm chasers show up at your place, send them packing. They are scammers! Do not sign ANYTHING with them, do not let them on your roof, do not engage their services. If you think you have actual storm damage, call one of the long-established local roofers/contractors. Better yet call your insurance agent and get advice before you start a claim. A quick note to those considering buying a new house in 2024. Before making the offer on the new place, call your insurance agent and find out if the house will qualify for a new policy and what the price would be. Over the past few months, we have seen insurance companies restricting their underwriting appetites for new business and many homes that would have qualified for preferred pricing just a few months ago, may now not qualify based on things like age of roofs or other characteristics the insurance companies are trying to avoid. I've seen clients that make an offer, have the offer accepted, and then start the process of looking for new Homeowners Insurance only to discover the new policy is difficult to obtain or much more expensive than they anticipated. A little insurance research goes a long way.
