While the first vending machines in the United States were introduced in 1888 with the sole intention of dispensing gum, the ironic gumball machine didn’t emerge until a couple of decades later. Both the gumball itself and the dispensing vending machines were introduced in 1907.

While it's common to buy a drink or a snack from vending machines, there are places in the world where even agricultural goods are sold. For instance, vending machines in Japan are known to sell not just eggs but produce as well.

The first American vending machine was built in 1888 by a company called the Thomas Adams Gum Company, who used their vending machines to dispense chewing gum on New York City train platforms.

The idea of adding games to vending machines in 1897 spawned a whole new type of mechanical device known as the “trade stimulators.” The birth of slot machines and pinball is ultimately rooted in these early devices.
