The fifty-six men who signed the Declaration of Independence knew what they were risking.
They pledged: "Our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."
Those weren't empty words.
Some saw their homes destroyed.
Some lost their wealth.
Some were imprisoned by the British.
Others watched family members suffer throughout the Revolutionary War.
The liberties we enjoy today were purchased through extraordinary courage, perseverance, and sacrifice.
As we celebrate Independence Day, may we remember not only the fireworks and festivities, but also the principles and the people that made this nation possible.
Happy Independence Day!

After months of debate, revisions, and sacrifice, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The Declaration announced to the world that the colonies had become free and independent states.
It also explained the principles upon which this new nation intended to stand:
That our rights come from our Creator.
That governments derive "their just powers from the consent of the governed."
That liberty is worth defending.

Think about the contradiction.
America is told to be ashamed of its history.
Ashamed of its borders.
Ashamed of its flag.
Ashamed of wanting laws enforced.
Yet we're also told that anyone who crosses those same borders deserves every benefit America has to offer.
That's not compassion.
That's contradiction.
A nation that stops valuing its own people won't stay a nation for long.

The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868 after the Civil War to guarantee citizenship and equal protection for formerly enslaved Americans.
That historical context matters.
Every nation has the sovereign right to decide who becomes a citizen and under what conditions. That's not hatred. That's nationhood.
The debate over birthright citizenship isn't about whether immigrants have dignity. It's about whether the 14th Amendment should be interpreted today exactly as it was understood when it was written or whether its meaning has expanded beyond its original purpose.
History matters.
Context matters.

Today, the Supreme Court proved two things:
1. Boys aren't girls.
2. Apparently, national sovereignty still isn't a priority.
One ruling defended reality.
The other ignored history and the original purpose of the 14th Amendment.
One was a win.
One was a reminder that we still have a lot of work to do.

Most Americans celebrate July 4.
But on July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress actually voted to declare the colonies free and independent states.
John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that he believed July 2 would become America's great national celebration.
The vote had been cast.
The decision had been made.
Now the world would hear why.

An ancient proverb says: "An enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Zohran Mamdani marched in the NYC Pride parade this weekend.
On the surface, that alliance doesn't make much sense.
Different worldviews.
Different values.
Different visions for society.
So why do they so often find themselves on the same side politically?
Who do you think their shared enemy is?

The Declaration was drafted.
The arguments were made.
But Congress still had to decide.
Delegates debated language, made revisions, and wrestled with the future of the colonies.
The birth of a nation did not happen in a single moment.
It was forged through conviction, discussion, and difficult decisions.

The Declaration teaches something profound:
Rights are inherent.
Government does not grant them.
Government exists to secure them.
This belief shaped the founding of the United States and remains one of the defining ideas of the American experiment.

Imagine telling John F. Kennedy that one day members of his party would openly joke about wiping their hands on the American flag.
He would've thought you were crazy.
Not your granddaddy's Democratic Party anymore.
