Summer may be a quieter season for many universities, but discovery and community continue year-round at Caltech. This month, Caltech celebrates the next wave of graduates at its 132nd Commencement, featuring keynote speaker Kip Thorne (BS ’62)—theoretical physicist, distinguished alumnus, and Nobel laureate. Later in June, find Caltech Astronomy in the community at the City of Astronomy Science Festival and at Dog Haus Biergarten for a series of Astronomy on Tap events.

As conversations around data centers and energy demand continue, one question grows increasingly important: How do we store energy more efficiently and more sustainably? Scientists like Caltech professor of chemistry Kimberly See are working on innovative battery chemistries for a more sustainable future.

How can AI help people and protect the environment?
In his Science Journeys talk, Smarter AI for a More Sustainable World, Caltech student Chris Yeh explores how AI can support scientists, conservationists, and engineers making real-world sustainability decisions.
One challenge: AI can make predictions, but it generally cannot show how certain it is in those predictions. Chris’s research focuses on helping AI systems better communicate uncertainty so people can better judge how to use the results.

It’s Earth Week! Caltech has long been at the forefront of sustainability research, from foundational air pollution studies that helped inform the Clean Air Act of 1970, to new chemistries for energy storage, to developing a new approach to climate modeling.
This week, join us for three events exploring the intersection of science, art, and the environment:
Tuesday: Get a sneak peek at a reading of The Heat of the Sun’s Rays, a science-driven play from the MACH 33 Festival.
Wednesday, Earth Day: Watch “The Spectrum of Life,” a documentary about NASA’s first biodiversity airborne campaign, BioSCape, in South Africa.
Saturday: Experience a concert composed by seismologist Lucy Jones and performed by the Colburn Baroque Ensemble, featuring researchers from Caltech’s Linde Center for Global Environmental Science in conversation about the drivers and projected consequences of climate change.

After the 2025 Eaton Fire, many were left with difficult questions about environmental exposure and cleanup, including Caltech professor of geochemistry Francois Tissot and his family. In his Watson Lecture, Tissot explains the need for more research around urban fires and how we can better protect communities in the future.
