Announcing Rose Parade Weather Modification Research Initiative (RP-WMRI)
In response to the rain during the 2026 Rose Parade, the Tournament of Roses has initiated exploratory discussions with atmospheric experts to evaluate weather modification through cloud seeding, alongside emerging concepts in atmokinesis, as part of a broader effort to mitigate rain during the Rose Parade.
Research is in the early stages, with 2027 identified as a potential timeline for implementation.
“As we look to the future, we are always exploring thoughtful, innovative approaches that enhance the experience for our participants and guests while honoring the traditions that make this event so special,” said David Eads, CEO of the Tournament of Roses.
The initiative, formally titled the Rose Parade Weather Modification Research Initiative (RP-WMRI), brings together a multidisciplinary group of atmospheric scientists, researchers and industry advisors to assess both established and emerging technologies.

“Cloud seeding has been studied and utilized in various regions for decades, and we’re now seeing increased interest in how it can be applied in highly targeted, event-specific environments,” said Dr. April F. Ools, a leading researcher in atmospheric innovation.

Tournament officials emphasized that all efforts remain in the research phase and are subject to further study, evaluation and regulatory review.
