"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Powerful words that are often debated. But what do they mean? Those who hate guns get hung up on the well regulated part or on the militia part. Those who enjoy their firearm freedoms tend to recite the part about not being infringed. But both parts are important and together are actually more powerful.

Shall not be infringed seems pretty clear. Don't mess with our rights. Those who cheer to have their freedoms taken from them and become slaves to the state will bark about the well regulated militia qualifier. So let's talk about that part.

"Well regulated" means that something is in proper working order, disciplined, and functioning. That's not my interpretation. That's the interpretation of historians. Words 250 years ago had different meanings than today. So, the founders wanted the militia to be armed, prepared, and trained. And I agree. The militia should be armed, trained, and prepared.

That brings us to the militia part of a well regulated militia. Who is the militia? Is the militia the government, or something else? When the Second Amendment was written, the "militia" was generally considered all able-bodied males. Some of the founders defined the militia as the entire population, excluding some public officials. The militia is the average civilian. We The People are the militia. You and I are the militia.

So let's put it all together in modern terms. Everyone should be armed and trained, and the government should leave our rights alone.
