Andre, a refugee from Congo, gardens and sells his produce at the Chicago farmers market. He also regularly attends a conversation group at Heidi's House Chicago, led by volunteer Jean. Recently, Andre shared some of his harvest as a thank-you. Volunteers often say they receive as much as they give—in this case, Jean went home with the makings of a delicious salad.

Two years ago, the Durrani family, refugees from Afghanistan, were invited to resettle in Chicago. Volunteers Roger and Devon warmly welcomed them. When they visited the family again recently, the children greeted them with excitement, speaking English fluently and confidently. It is wonderful to see refugee families thriving and building brighter futures in their new home.

World Refugee Day is a chance to recognize the courage and resilience of our refugee neighbors. These moments from last year’s celebration remind us why it’s such a joy-filled tradition! This Saturday, Exodus staff and volunteers will once again be cheering on Exodus United in the World Refugee Day Soccer Tournament. Join us at Chicago’s Foster Street Beach from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. for cultural performances, delicious food, and more. We’d love to see you at the Exodus tent!
