Along the coast of California, giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) can grow up to 2 feet per day, forming towering underwater canopies that stretch from the seafloor to the surface. These forests are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth, providing food and shelter to rockfish, harbor seals, and countless other fish and invertebrates.
Light filters through the kelp blades in golden beams, surge gently sways the fronds back and forth, and the entire forest feels alive.
