⛈️ SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH — Lafayette County Included ⛈️

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch ( #431) for Lafayette County and much of North Mississippi until 10:00 PM CDT tonight, Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Here’s what we’re watching for:
🧊 HAIL — Isolated hail up to quarter size possible
💨 WIND — Scattered gusts up to 70 MPH possible
⚡ LIGHTNING — Frequent lightning possible

A “Watch” means conditions are favorable for severe storms to develop. Now is the time to prepare, not react. 70 MPH winds can bring down trees and power lines and turn loose objects into projectiles.

✅ Secure loose items around the yard, patio, and pool
✅ Bring in and safely park trailers, boats, and equipment
✅ Charge phones and know where your weather radio is
✅ Have a plan to get indoors quickly — “When thunder roars, go indoors”
✅ Watch for ponding on low-lying roads around Oxford and the county

⛈️ SEVERE WEATHER THREAT TODAY — Lafayette County ⛈️

Hot, humid, and unsettled across North Mississippi today. The atmosphere is primed for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop this afternoon and evening and there's a better-than-usual chance some of them turn severe.

🌬️ MAIN THREAT: DAMAGING WIND
The strongest storms can produce sudden downburst gusts of 50–65 mph — enough to snap tree limbs, down power lines, and cause localized damage. These storms build fast and hit hard with little warning.

✅ WHAT YOU CAN DO:
🔹 Stay weather-aware this afternoon and evening
🔹 When thunder roars, head indoors ⚡
🔹 Secure loose outdoor items — patio furniture, trash cans, trampolines
🔹 Have a way to receive warnings (phone alerts, NOAA weather radio)
🔹 Be ready for brief power outages

Storms can strengthen quickly, so keep an eye on the sky across Oxford, Abbeville, Taylor, College Hill, and Harmontown.
