As we head into the hottest days of the year we would like to share some information on heat stress & fatigue awareness.
Heat stress and fatigue are serious hazards in arboriculture and tree care. Long hours, physically demanding work, high temperatures, and humidity can increase the risk of illness, injury, and accidents. Recognizing the signs early and taking preventive measures helps keep crews safe and productive.
Prevention
Before starting work:
• Arrive well rested and hydrated.
• Wear lightweight, breathable clothing appropriate for the weather.
• Check the forecast and plan for high temperatures.
• Begin drinking water before feeling thirsty.
While on the job:
• Drink water frequently throughout the day.
• Take breaks in shaded or cooled areas when possible.
• Use a buddy system to watch for signs of heat stress and fatigue.
• Pace work activities during periods of extreme heat.
• Avoid excessive caffeine and energy drinks.
Watch for Warning Signs
Heat Stress:
• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness or headache
• Muscle cramps
• Nausea
• Confusion or loss of coordination
Fatigue:
• Slower reaction times
• Difficulty concentrating
• Poor decision-making
• Increased irritability
• Reduced awareness of hazards
Response
• Stop work immediately and move to a cool or shaded area.
• Drink water or an electrolyte replacement beverage.
• Loosen or remove excess PPE and clothing if safe to do so.
• Notify a supervisor and monitor symptoms.
• Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms worsen, the employee becomes confused, or loses consciousness.
Remember: Heat stress and fatigue can affect anyone, regardless of experience level. Taking breaks, staying hydrated, and looking out for one another are critical parts of maintaining a safe work environment.
