Defending Ourselves Against Negative Thoughts: aka Logismoi (From The Mountain of Silence)
No matter which side of an issue we find ourselves on, negativity toward others harms both them and us. In The Mountain of Silence, the saints and mystics offer practical ways to defend ourselves when negative thoughts—known as logismoi—cross our minds.
1. The Strategy of Indifference
This strategy is so simple that we often overlook it—which is almost the point. Imagine a loud plane flying over your home. Can you stop it by yelling, shaking your fist, or becoming upset? No. Engaging with the disturbance only creates more disturbance within us.
Likewise, when negative thoughts first arise, the best response is often not to engage them. Do not open a dialogue with the intruder. Do not interact out of curiosity or overconfidence. As The Mountain of Silence teaches, giving attention to logismoi allows them to grow louder and bolder. The wiser response is to disregard them completely.
This same strategy can help when we are provoked by others. People are not logismoi, but they can produce negative thoughts or actions. When someone insults or provokes us, responding often fuels the fire. Instead, we can go within, witness the situation, and choose not to feed it. The ego may want to defend itself, but silence and non-engagement often restore peace.
There is also an advanced method called the Adversarial Method, which is discussed further in The Mountain of Silence for those who wish to explore it more deeply.
For most of us, the most helpful beginning is simple: keep the negative thoughts from taking root.

The Limitations of Worldly Freedoms

Worldly freedoms—such as the rights to move, believe, and express faith—are inherently unstable and can change at any moment. When these freedoms shift, they often lead to frustration, anger, or even rage, hardening the heart rather than bringing true peace. These emotional turbulences highlights that relying solely on external liberties cannot provide enduring contentment or genuine inner peace.
As long as we seek fulfillment in a world defined by duality, lasting peace and satisfaction will remain out of reach, both individually and collectively.

Understanding Freedom on the Spiritual Path

Exploring the Meaning of Freedom

Freedom means different things to different people. On the spiritual journey, it's vital to reflect on why the kinds of freedom most people pursue today often fail to deliver lasting peace and fulfillment. Even those dedicated to world peace may not find deep contentment by focusing only on external forms of freedom.
This months newsletter invites you to consider a deeper, more enduring liberation.
