"We moved the mourning outside. We turned the grief into gathering. We took the flowers off the graves and put them in the centerpiece, and we called it a cookout.

Because we really did want to celebrate, to live loudly in honor of those who couldn’t. The backyard became the memorial. The grill became the altar. The food became the way we said: “We remember you, and we are still here, and we refuse to let either of those things be small.”
