Fiery CJ Obas i is an award-winning Nigerian filmmaker and visionary storyteller renowned for his bold, genre-defying works that have placed African cinema firmly on the global stage. His latest feature, Mami Wata, a stunning black-and-white reimagining of African mythology, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Cinematography, and has since captivated audiences worldwide.

A pioneer of Nigeria’s “New Wave” cinema, Obasi’s distinctive visual style, cultural depth, and fearless storytelling have earned him recognition at Venice, Rotterdam, FESPACO, and numerous international festivals. Through his production company, Fiery Film Company, he continues to challenge conventions and champion authentic African narratives with universal resonance.

At AFFIF 2025, Obasi brings his creative fire and global experience to a powerful masterclass on “Directing for a Global Audience,” guiding emerging filmmakers on how to craft stories that are deeply local yet globally relevant.
