Dana White helped turn mixed martial arts (MMA) from a fringe spectacle once dismissed as “human cockfighting” into one of the most powerful forces in sports and entertainment through the rise of the UFC. Now, he’s bringing it to the White House.

“There are some nights, I’ll get up at the end and go, ‘What the f-ck do I do for a living?’”

On June 14, the UFC is staging an event on the South Lawn of the White House, a spectacle that will also serve as the unofficial opening of a summerlong celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

To supporters, it’s a celebration of toughness, bravado, and masculine energy. To critics, it risks evoking a modern gladiator arena — a celebration of sanctioned violence that to some, symbolizes American crass, not class.

Whether or not you admire White’s un-filtered, profane leadership style, or his unapologetic embrace of the masculinity now synonymous with Trump’s brand, you can’t deny he’s at the peak of his powers.
